Building a Safer Church: Practical Steps for Risk Management

If your church operates on a tight budget and with a busy ministry staff, taking on additional responsibilities like safety and security can feel challenging. Yet, these efforts are vital. Churches frequently face losses caused by storms, falls, water damage, theft, fires, vandalism, and similar risks.

The encouraging news is that meaningful improvements can be made without adding significant cost. What’s needed most is a committed team of leaders and volunteers dedicated to protecting both people and property.

Form a Safety and Risk Management Team

Start by recruiting volunteers to form a safety or risk management team. Aim for members with experience in fields such as facility management, insurance, law enforcement, child care, or healthcare. Their mission should be to identify risks and create a structured program to mitigate them.

Once formed, the team should implement routine inspections of church grounds and facilities, addressing:

  • Uneven walking surfaces and worn carpeting that may cause slips or falls

  • Fire hazards such as overloaded outlets, old wiring, or flammable materials

  • Roof damage or blocked drainage systems

  • Trees or branches close to electrical wires or buildings

  • Missing safety equipment in nurseries or daycare areas

  • Unlabeled or unlocked cleaning chemicals

  • Poorly maintained playground equipment

Regular maintenance and proactive corrections can prevent many of the most common church-related losses.

Slips and Falls

Slips and falls are the leading cause of injuries on church property. Repair uneven pathways, secure carpeting, and in winter, promptly remove snow and ice from high-traffic areas. Use Ice-Melt or similar products where surfaces tend to freeze.

Water Damage

Frozen pipes, leaking roofs, and sump pump failures are common sources of water-related losses. Keep roofs and gutters in good condition, insulate exposed pipes, check attic ventilation, and routinely test sump pumps to reduce the risk.

Theft and Burglary Prevention: The “5 L’s” Approach

About one in eight churches experiences theft or burglary each year. Strengthen your church’s security by following these five guidelines:

  • Lock-Up: Always secure doors and windows when unoccupied.

  • Lighting: Keep entrances and parking areas well-lit from dusk to dawn.

  • Landscaping: Trim shrubs and trees near windows and remove accessible tools or ladders.

  • Lookout: Create a “Church Watch” program with neighbors to report suspicious activity.

  • Law Enforcement: Build relationships with local police and invite them to include the property in their patrol routes.

Reducing Preventable Losses

While natural disasters like hurricanes or tornadoes are inevitable, research shows that more than half of church-related losses can be prevented through consistent precautions, maintenance, and volunteer involvement. With commitment and teamwork, your church can maintain a welcoming and secure environment for every member and guest.
